Unfortunately this doesn't end with a "successful" hunt.... This past Saturday I hit the woods in a new area. I had gone in with the attitude that this was mostly a day of "scouting", since this was a totally new area to me, but I brought my bow and stand with anyways because you never know. After a couple of hours, I found an area that looked to have a LOT of traffic through it, and decided to set up and see if anything came by. I busted out my leftover Trophy Blend Herd scent from last year, and shaved off a small piece with the cap every 10-15 yards at about a 30 yard perimeter around the tree I was going to climb. Shortly after legal shooting hours, a big, fat doe comes walking in. It is too dark to see my pin or even consider taking a shot, so I just sat there quietly watching. She got to where I started laying out the Trophy Blend "shavings" and followed the perimeter I laid, stopping roughly where I deposited a "chip" every time. Never went on "high alert", "waved the white flag" or anything. Just slowly made her way around where I had placed the trophy blend and then eventually continued on her way after about 30 minutes or so. I wasn't able to connect (Had she come by 10 minutes sooner, maybe), but I could certainly tell that, even after being stored away for a year, the Trophy Blend scents were still good. I haven't run into any other product that can be used for multiple seasons--they either dry out or go rancid and worthless. I still consider this night a success because I was able to see something, and had there been more light would have had SEVERAL shot opportunities, especially considering I went into this area "cold". I'll definitely look to get more when I run out. I probably haven't even used half of any of the sticks that I got last year, so it will be a while. |
